Resting in God.
"Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls." - Matthew 11:28,29 NIV
What does is mean to rest in God?
According to Webster’s dictionary, to “rest” means: “to refrain from labor or exertion; to be free from anxiety or disturbance”. Given that definition, to rest in God simply means to refrain from trying to do any activity that is beyond our human ability to perform. There are some things that God requires of us. It is within our ability to perform. Out of obedience, we all seek to perform those things. But then there are things that are completely outside of our ability to perform. Only god can do those things. To rest in god is to acknowledge that we are at best limited resources, and God is an unlimited resource. To rest means that we discern what we are able to do, versus what god is only able to do and humbly accept our limitations. To rest in God means to trust him to perform, and be free of anxiety about doing what only God can. Be blessed and just rest!
